Everything You Need to Know About Gentrification

"The Rent is Too Damn High"
Every day thousands of people are being forced out of their homes, due to their inability to pay rent. It's not their fault. The cost of rent, especially in a city like New York, has been increasing at an exponential rate. The result, an increase in homelessness throughout the city. But why has the rent increased at such a quick rate? One major contributing factor is the process of gentrification. Gentrification is the process of renewal or rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents. Gentrification doesn't only effect residents, but it also effects small businesses. Due to zoning laws, which are frequently changed, gentrification occurs more frequently then ever. Large businesses, or chain stores, move into an neighborhood and develop in area they deem potentially profitable. These areas are typically areas that are prime "gentrification spots". This website seeks to educate the general public on the causes and effects of gentrification, as well as the rights you have as  residents of a neighborhood. Hopefully, through this we can help decrease the number of residents displaced each year.

What is Gentrification?

Gentrification is the process of renewal or rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents.

Is Gentrification Good or Bad?

Gentrification cannot be simply defined, but its presence has been felt by millions of Americans in the past decade.  It occurs when wealthy residents move into a working or lower class neighborhood.  This tends to lead to a safer environment, and a higher quality of life within the neighborhood.   However, there is a darker side to gentrification: the fabric of a  neighborhood can completely alter, with small businesses replaced by large ones, and citizens are unable to afford their rent.

Causes of Gentrification

The four main causes of gentrification are:
  1. Real Estate Speculation
  2. Harassment of Tenants by Landlords
  3. Business Owners Trying to appeal to people not from that area
  4. Government policies regarding zoning laws.

Effects of Gentrification

  • Displacement of residents
  • Displacement of businesses
  • Change in the culture of a community
  • Rising Rent Costs
